Σελίδα 9 TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS IN EGLISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES
HALLOWEEN: It is celebrated on October 31. It is a celebration rooted
in the past. The holiday was brought to America by Irish and Scottish im-
migrants combining the features of the Celtic and Christian holidays. It is
celebrated with feasting and mischief making. English- speaking countries all
over the world celebrate Halloween or a form of it. The original source of
Halloween is believed to be of pagan traditions, when people often honored
the gods of fruits or the dead people.
HALLOWEEN: We all know about carnival and we all like to wear funny,
scary and weird costumes. In Canada and many other English-speaking coun-
tries all around the world people celebrate Halloween. Almost all kids dress up
in scary costumes and in groups they go from house to house asking for Trick or
Treat. The treats are usually candies, sweets or chocolate. All houses are deco-
rated with scary things like skeletons and ghosts. But the symbol of Halloween
is the Jack-o’-Lantern. This is a pumpkin carved in a way that looks like a scary
face. It is a really fun time for both kids and adults!
