The Hellenic Mathematical Society decided for its 100th anniversary, to create a new competition under the name Pythagoras.
The objectives of the new competition are:
- To develop students’ critical thinking and thinking abilities.
- For students to recognize the importance of Mathematics in everyday reality.
This competition will not directly or indirectly control school performance and knowledge, but it’s about the ability of the competitor to think mathematically .
Indicative of the design in this phase, is that students can also bring theory notes with them to use throughout the competition, so that their performance in the competition will not be based on sterile memorization.
From the above it is obvious that the new competition is for all children, who would like to live the mathematical experience, regardless of their school performance.
Students will have to answer 25 multiple choice questions. Only the correct answers with 4 points each are scored. The topics will be scaled by difficulty, with the most complex ones at the end and will require mainly Mathematical reasoning, rather than just actions or simple application of formulas.
The cost of participation per student will be the symbolic amount of (10 euros) and will correspond to the cost of an annual subscription to the new EME Magazine entitled PYTHAGORA.
More information can be found on the EME website: http://www.hms.gr/pythagoras/index.html, (such as What the Competition is about, Indicative Topics, Teacher’s Handbook, Examination Centers, Competition Organizing Issues, etc.). a).
